Devotees and clerics alike can tell when the end of the yearly rebirth cycle nears by the overabundant and sudden growth of the temple’s rose garden beyond the courtyard and into the rest of the sanctuary. The flowers seem to grow larger and more open. The thorny vines make the space almost impassable for visitors and leave the temple feeling less like a sanctuary and more of a dangerous trap. When this happens, the space is left unkempt, since for every vine and flower cut, three more take its place until the renewal ceremony is held.
